Conditions we treat

Sciatica relief in Battle Creek and Galesburg.

When back pain stops staying in your back and starts shooting down a leg, that is often sciatica. Here is what is going on and how we treat it.

What sciatica actually is

Sciatica is not a diagnosis so much as a description, pain along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the low back through the hip and down the back of the leg. People describe it as sharp, burning, or electric, sometimes with numbness or a leg that feels weak. It can make sitting, standing, or sleeping miserable.

The nerve gets irritated where it exits the spine or as it passes through the muscles of the hip. Finding which of those it is matters, because it changes what helps.

How we approach sciatica at Myers Chiropractic

We start with an exam that locates where the nerve is being irritated. When it is coming from the low back or hip joints, adjustments can take pressure off the nerve, and in house massage can release the muscles that clamp down around it. For an inflamed, angry nerve, Class IV laser can help settle it.

Some cases of leg pain need something we do not provide, and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.

Ready to settle that leg pain?

Send a request and the front desk calls you back. You are not committing to a plan by coming in once.

What your first visit looks like

You show us where the pain travels and what makes it better or worse. We test the nerve, check how your low back and hip move, and take images if they will help. Then we explain what we found and recommend a starting point, which you decide on.

Sciatica questions

What people ask us about sciatica.

Is sciatica the same as back pain?

They are related. Sciatica is back or hip trouble that irritates the sciatic nerve, so the pain travels down the leg instead of staying put. Treating the source in the back or hip is how we address it.

Will I need imaging?

Sometimes. If the exam suggests images will change what we recommend, we take them. If not, we do not.

How long does sciatica take to settle?

It depends on the cause and how long it has been going on. After the exam we give you an honest estimate rather than a promise.

Can I make it worse by waiting?

A nerve that has been irritated for a long time can be slower to calm down. Getting it looked at sooner is usually easier than waiting it out.
