Conditions we treat
If your back has finally gotten bad enough that you are reading this at night, you are in the right place. Here is a plain look at what is going on and what we do about it.
Back pain shows up in a lot of shapes. For some people it is a dull ache low in the back that never fully goes away. For others it is a sharp catch when they bend to tie a shoe, or a morning stiffness that takes an hour to loosen. Some feel it after a long drive down I 94, some after lifting a box the wrong way, and plenty of people cannot point to a single moment when it started.
Most back pain comes down to joints in the spine that are not moving the way they should, and the muscles around them tightening up to protect the area. That guarding is why a sore back makes you walk stiffly and why it often feels worse the next morning. It is your body bracing. The good news is that this kind of back pain responds well to hands on care.
There are backs we do not treat with an adjustment, and we will tell you plainly if yours is one of them. That is what the exam is for.
We start by finding out why your back hurts, not just where. Two people with the same lower back pain can need very different care, so we examine before we do anything. When an adjustment is the right move, we use the technique that fits you, from a firm Gonstead adjustment to the gentle tap of an Activator instrument for someone who does not want to be twisted.
If tight muscles are part of the picture, and with back pain they usually are, in house massage therapy loosens the soft tissue so the adjustment holds longer. For a stubborn, inflamed area that is slow to settle, Class IV laser is there when a case calls for it. You are not sold a package. We recommend what we think will help and you decide.
Send a request and the front desk calls you back. You are not committing to a plan by coming in once.
The first visit is a conversation and an exam. You tell us when it started, what makes it worse, and what you have already tried. We check how your back moves, test a few things, and if it is needed we take images. Then we sit down and show you what we found in words that make sense, no jargon.
From there we give you an honest recommendation. Sometimes that is a short course of care. Sometimes it is a single adjustment and some advice to take home. Once in a while it is a referral somewhere else, because your back needs something we do not provide. Whatever it is, you hear it straight, and what happens next is your call.
Back pain is bread and butter for all five of our doctors. Here are three you might see for it.
Back pain questions
It depends on what is causing it and how long it has been going on. After the exam we give you an honest estimate. Some people feel better quickly, others need more time. You are never locked into a set number.
For most people, yes. We examine first, and if an adjustment is not the right move for your back we tell you and suggest another approach. We adjust everyone from newborns to seniors, and we match the technique to the person.
As a general rule, ice for a fresh, sharp flare up and heat for a dull, tight ache. We will give you specific guidance for your situation at the visit.
No referral is needed. Send a new patient request or call the office nearest you, and the front desk will set up your first visit.
